How to use the Standalone Mode:


Diagnostic ports in the Standalone Mode:

Source ports: USB 3.0 (HOST) and Port 0 (SATA / PCIe / NVMe)

To diagnose and investigate the drive, you should connect them to the Source Ports that have a Hardware Write Blocker - the “Wr. Protection” switch. When it’s turned on, a yellow LED lights up and indicates that the record block is activated.

The following drives can be connected to the Source diagnostic ports: USB Flash, SATA/PATA*/USB HDD, PCIe NVMe/SATA/USB SSD.

*To deal with PATA HDD, you need to use an additional PC SATA-PATA adapter (can be purchased optionally).


Target ports: Port 1 (SATA) and Port 2 (SATA)

The Target ports are used to create image copies of data. You can create such copies on 1 or 2 drives simultaneously. Only HDD and SSD drives with the SATA interface can be connected to the target diagnostic ports.

The copying speed in the Standalone Mode is up to 500 MB/s.


Precise logging for all operations

All operations performed in the Standalone Mode are logged and recorded into the log file inside the Non-Volatile Memory. When you connect the controller to the host computer, you may view or print these log files.

For the purposes of precise logging, the PC-3000 Portable III has a century calendar and the UTC clock (world time clock) that are able to run without interruption thanks to the built-in lithium power supply.

How to recover data with the PC-3000 Portable III Systems if HDD is damaged

There are three types of HDD malfunctions: physical damage, logical damage and a combination of physical and logical damage.

PC-3000 Systems are the only products that combine methods for solving both physical and logical problems. This allows you to effectively solve the widest range of tasks: from the simplest to the most complex ones.

The most frequent reasons of HDD damage:


  • failure of one or more magnetic-resistance heads
  • damaged service information modules
  • magnetic surface defects like scratches
  • damaged PCB
  • other damage

HDD diagnosis can be done in standard (user) and technological (factory) modes. There are special PC-3000 adapters used for switching the HDD into the technological mode to get access to the internal HDD software and user data. This opportunity is a result of many years of diligent research directed by our vast expertise in recovering data from HDD.


A damaged HDD can stop functioning at any time. That is why it is very important to read the maximum data volume in the shortest period of time. With the PC-3000 Portable III Systems, you can create both full (sector-by-sector) or partial data copies from damaged drives. The thing is Data Extractor Portable has integrated functionality for logical analysis of file systems which allows reading necessary data only. This technology greatly reduces the volume of the read data, the duty cycle of damaged HDDs and the time required for data recovery.

In many cases, it is not necessary to fully repair the HDD to recover data. It could suffice to correct the internal HDD software. This allows for temporal access to user data and you can read the required information.

The issues The solutions to the issues
One of the magnetic heads is damaged You can get data access through the remaining heads using the “MR-Head Shift technology”. The damaged head is substituted by the adjacent correct magnetic head. It allows you to keep the integrity of the translated data and to read big data volumes without exchanging the head stack.
A problem with the initial HDD initialization The detailed start process log can show some information that helps to identify the damaged program modules with service information. Service area copies can be switched over to make the correct system head initialization. If the initialization process fails due to the problem with loading program modules into RAM, you can use special Loader that creates essential HDD content into RAM.
A significantly damaged surface Technological mode allows you to read data using physical parameters in PZCHS (Physical Zones Cylinder-Head-Sector) or line physical area with ABA. It is very often the only way to read data from significantly damaged surfaces.
A PCB is damaged You can use another correct PCB taken from an HDD donor. This will save a lot of time in gaining access to user data.
An HDD has a USB interface USB HDD access can be done using the PC-3000 Portable III USB host port that allows you to deal with damaged drives. If there is no access to an HDD via the USB host port, the COM port Terminal adapter or an adapted SATA HDD PCB are used.

To make initial diagnostics in the Full-Featured Mode, the PC-3000 universal utility is launched. It diagnoses the HDD in user mode. The following checks are done: if the HDD is identified and if the HDD is password locked; check of surface access by LBA to the user data area and HDD translation system etc. If there are any HDD malfunctions, a special vendor-specific technological utility (intended for a specific HDD vendor) is used to repair the drive and gain access to user data in technological mode.

How to repair HDDs with the PC-3000 Portable III Systems

The PC-3000 Portable III Systems allow you to repair physically damaged HDD drives in factory mode. A wide range of functions for repairing HDDs enables the user to:


  • diagnose the reason of HDD malfunction: PCB, heads or magnetic surface overwrite FLASH ROM
  • switch off damaged magnetic heads
  • detect and exclude damage in the HDD service area
  • recalculate and overwrite service modules
  • regenerate the translation system
  • clean and reset S.M.A.R.T. logs and tables
  • detect bad areas in magnetic surfaces and to exclude them from the HDD working area.

The PC-3000 Portable III HDD firmware database

The PC-3000 Portable III Systems have a massive database of factory firmware resources: FLASH ROMs, service area modules, service area tracks, and other HDD critical resources. The database is systematized and stores all data in compressed format. It allows getting quick and easy data access and sharing firmware resources between several PC-3000 Kits.

Dedicated modes for experienced users

There are two dedicated modes intended for experienced users: integrated script system and ATA commander.

Script system allows creating algorithms used for issuing commands to HDDs in Visual Basic Script including data preparation and interpretation of results. The advanced object model is used for getting access to HDDs. This object model is used by PC-3000 utilities. This algorithm can be added to any PC-3000 utility as a "user" mode.

ATA commander is an interactive mode that allows issuing commands to HDDs (including technological commands) even by a user who does not have programming skills. You can set values for HDD registers (including registers for LBA 48 mode), and prepare and provide HDD data commands using a binary text editor. The sequence of supplied HDD commands can be classified by types and saved to file for later use or for sending to another PC-3000 owner. Judging from HDD command data, ATA Commander can generate script text for using it from the Script system or as a "user mode".


Almost all modern SSDs have hardware data encryption. That’s why the chip-off method becomes useless for accessing data on a damaged device. In this case, the Techno Mode used in the PC-3000 SSD Systems is the only possible way to restore logical access to data on the SSD. This method of working with SSDs is unique and unparalleled - no other tool can do the same!

The PC-3000 Portable III SSD/Ultimate Systems which include the PC-3000 SSD Extended software can help to deal with the most complex SSD cases with such typical signs of internal Firmware corruption as wrong or zero capacity, no drive ID, invisible status in BIOS/OS despite the fact that a drive is connected.

The Universal Utility intended for diagnosing any SSD based on the ATA-8 specification (both currently existing models and those that will be manufactured in the future).

The Active Utilities (Special Utilities) intended for working with a particular drive model in factory mode. It enables us to deeply diagnose SSDs, to perform service operations, to rewrite the drive's microcode, to get direct access to memory chips, to carry out low-level formatting blocking the damaged cells and placing their addresses into the defect table, and to perform many other useful operations.

The PC-3000 SSD Extended software add-on is started from the main window of the PC-3000 Portable SSD/Ultimate System by means of clicking a button on the desktop panel.

How to recover data from damaged HDD in a RAID with the PC-3000 Portable III Systems

The PC-3000 Portable III RAID/Ultimate Systems which include the Data Extractor RAID Edition software can work with 3 damaged HDDs connected to the PC-3000 Portable III ports within one task at the same time. The total number of connected HDDs can be increased by using motherboard ports and file-images.

Before the Data Extractor RAID Edition appeared, you would have had to have made a full sector-by-sector copy of the data from the simple stripe if one of its members was physically damaged and could not be connected in a standard way, or it would not have been possible to get access to its sectors without using the PC-3000 methods. You could only have attempted to recover the user data after creating a copy.

Taking into account the significant capacity of high-end HDDs and possible issues with a full copy of the damaged drive, the PC-3000 Portable RAID/Ultimate Systems provide a unique approach:


  1. Create a Virtual RAID.
  2. Open the Virtual RAID in the Data Extractor Explorer and get an understanding of the data organization in the virtual RAID.
  3. Build a map of the required data. It can be a map of used sectors, a data map of the required catalogs, a necessary file map, or a metadata map.
  4. For the built map, build a “Sub-map” of sectors to be read from the damaged HDD.
  5. Make a sector-by-sector copy only of these required sectors by using the Data Extractor.
  6. Save the required data.

Even if the configuration appears to be simple, the data recovery from RAID is not an easy process, because it can be difficult to define the correct order of HDDs, the block size and the initial shift. April 14, 2020 The PC-3000 Portable III Now Supports the NVMe SSDs Based on Phison PS5007 Controller!

The PC-3000 Portable III is the first and the only solution for recovering data from PCIe NVMe SSDs using the Techno Mode. At the initial release, it supported only Silicon Motion SSDs based on SM2260 and SM2263 controllers. But it was just the beginning!

Now we have significantly expanded the list of supported drives by adding the NVMe SSDs based on the Phison PS5007 controller. And since all the PS5007-based SSDs are technically the same, you can recover data from any model based on this controller, even if it’s not listed in the Utility.

ACE Lab developers continue enhancing the software of the PC-3000 Portable III System with new features for the user community. As a result, the most universal and powerful tool became even faster – now the speed of internal copying is up to 490 MB/s. We also added the support of HDDs and SSDs with a logical sector size other than 512 bytes that had not previously been possible. Samsung HDD

  • The "Send "LE"" ("LE" package) has been added in the "Utility Actions";
  • In defect's editor fixed error when it was impossible to enter a cylinder number greater than 0xFFFF when adding a defect;
  • In "Reading modules" test fixed error when the module was first read, and then the "Skip Existing Modules" checkbox was checked;
  • In "Disabling zone and heads" test fixed error when it was impossible to interrupt the running process;
  • Added header check when editing the SNTBL module;
  • Added possibility to reserve modules not only by composing reading but with chosen heads;
  • For Samsung "USB Utility" (USB host Portable3 version) added the test "Logical Scan";
  • Added the "Reconnect COM port" menu;

  • Added S.M.A.R.T. enabling in module B2 PROFILE to the "S.M.A.R.T. Clearing" (by utility method). For M8E drives that pass the burn-test;
  • Added possibility to choose values from the list of standard capacities to the "Passport data editor" test and the menu "Set max LBA" from the "Disabling zones and Heads" test;

Toshiba

  • Added a logical scan for the PC-3000 Portable-III complex and for the USB Utility (for the USB Host port).

The PC-3000 Core

  • A completely redesigned simplified interface. Added support for NVMe and USB drives. Added report on the results of diagnostics and statistics on a copy creation.
  • Imaging speed increased by increasing priority of threads engaged in "secondary" parsing processes (background analysis, writing and reading maps) and energy saving settings changes (% of process using etc). Due to these improvements imaging speed was increased to minimum reading speed of two devices (source and patient). For example, the PC-3000 SAS II device is able to perform imaging with about 220 MB/sec;
  • Alternative maps
    • real-time coloring possibility for alternative map (during the reading process for example) was added;
    • real-time coloring possibility for alternative map on drives with changed sector size and "connected" map during the reading initial drives was added;
    • "Snapshots based on legend" alternative maps for File systems option was added.
  • During the saving process from the searching window now only saves files that meet the search criteria;

RAW recovery

  • Fixed the Fake APFS structures searching result issue;
  • Some types of files control has been improved to avoid possible fake searching result;
  • *.heic files are parsing now (before determined like *.mp4);

  • DHF and WFS structures searching has been added, also virtual partitions adding methods has been improved.
  • Virtual Drive - Map Decrypted:
    • Added support of 256 bit keys;

    • Metadata parsing has been improved. Loading speed has been improved.

  • NTFS file system
    • Added parser for NTFS LogFile. LogFile contains NTFS metadata changes (MFT, Index). Option is in the context menu of file system node (menu "Parse LFS", LFS stands for Log File Service). As a result, the virtual disk with so-called layers is created. It's possible to select a layer on the disk. Layer presents a snapshot of metadata at a certain time period. Number of layers correlates with the "age" of the layer. Based on practice, LogFile can contain metadata for a time period from several hours to several months.
    • Implemented basic support for the new type of EFS metadata.
    • Improved start offset detection for partitions with huge amount of non-resident catalogs;
    • Added support for MFT uploading for tasks with several disks.
    • Implemented saving procedure for deduplicated files with resident attribute C0.

Silicon Motion

  • eNew loaders have been added for SM2246EN and SM2246XT controllers;
  • During translator building an output of the total number of defective pages has been added into the log;
  • Tests for translator saving and uploading have been added;

Possibility to decrypt software encrypted partitions (Microsoft Bitlocker, Apple FileVault, TrueCrypt) and hardware encrypted WesternDigital drives (including Self-encrypting drives) if there is a key from the user. So if there are scratches on the surface or other damages, you are able to open the partition even without a full copy of the drive.

Source ports: USB 3.0 (HOST) and Port 0 (SATA / PCIe / NVMe)

To diagnose and investigate the drive, you should connect them to the Source Ports that have a Hardware Write Blocker - the “Wr. Protection” switch. When it’s turned on, a yellow LED lights up and indicates that the record block is activated.

The following drives can be connected to the Source diagnostic ports: USB Flash, SATA/PATA*/USB HDD, PCIe NVMe/SATA/USB SSD.

*To deal with PATA HDD, you need to use an additional PC SATA-PATA adapter (can be purchased optionally).


Target ports: Port 1 (SATA) and Port 2 (SATA)

The Target ports are used to create image copies of data. You can create such copies on 1 or 2 drives simultaneously. Only HDD and SSD drives with the SATA interface can be connected to the target diagnostic ports.

The copying speed in the Standalone Mode is up to 500 MB/s.


Precise logging for all operations

All operations performed in the Standalone Mode are logged and recorded into the log file inside the Non-Volatile Memory. When you connect the controller to the host computer, you may view or print these log files.

For the purposes of precise logging, the PC-3000 Portable III has a century calendar and the UTC clock (world time clock) that are able to run without interruption thanks to the built-in lithium power supply.

How to recover evidence with the PC-3000 Portable III Systems if HDD is damaged

There are three types of HDD malfunctions: physical damage, logical damage and a combination of physical and logical damage.

The PC-3000 Systems are the only products that combine methods for solving both physical and logical problems. This allows you to effectively solve the widest range of tasks: from the simplest to the most complex ones.


The most frequent reasons of HDD damage:


  • failure of one or more magnetic-resistance heads
  • damaged service information modules
  • magnetic surface defects like scratches
  • damaged PCB
  • other damage

HDD diagnosis can be done in standard (user) and technological (factory) modes. There are special PC-3000 adapters used for switching the HDD into the technological mode to get access to the internal HDD software and criminal data. This opportunity is a result of many years of diligent research directed by our vast expertise in recovering data from HDD.


A damaged HDD can stop functioning at any time. That is why it is very important to read the maximum data volume in the shortest period of time. With the PC-3000 Portable III Systems, you can create both full (sector-by-sector) or partial data copies from damaged drives. The thing is Data Extractor Portable has integrated functionality for logical analysis of file systems which allows reading necessary data only. This technology greatly reduces the volume of the read data, the duty cycle of damaged HDDs and the time required for forensics data recovery.

In many cases, it is not necessary to fully repair the HDD to get evidence. It could suffice to correct the internal HDD software. This allows for temporal access to user data and you can read the required information.

The issues The solutions to the issues
One of the magnetic heads is damaged You can get data access through the remaining heads using the “MR-Head Shift technology”. The damaged head is substituted by the adjacent correct magnetic head. It allows you to keep the integrity of the translated data and to read big data volumes without exchanging the head stack.
A problem with the initial HDD initialization The detailed start process log can show some information that helps to identify the damaged program modules with service information. Service area copies can be switched over to make the correct system head initialization. If the initialization process fails due to the problem with loading program modules into RAM, you can use special Loader that creates essential HDD content into RAM.
A significantly damaged surface Technological mode allows you to read data using physical parameters in PZCHS (Physical Zones Cylinder-Head-Sector) or line physical area with ABA. It is very often the only way to read data from significantly damaged surfaces.
A PCB is damaged You can use another correct PCB taken from an HDD donor. This will save a lot of time in gaining access to user data.
An HDD has a USB interface USB HDD access can be done using the PC-3000 Portable III USB host port that allows you to deal with damaged drives. If there is no access to an HDD via the USB host port, the COM port Terminal adapter or an adapted SATA HDD PCB are used.

To make initial diagnostics in the Full-Featured Mode, the PC-3000 universal utility is launched. It diagnoses the HDD in user mode. The following checks are done: if the HDD is identified and if the HDD is password locked; check of surface access by LBA to the user data area and HDD translation system etc. If there are any HDD malfunctions, a special vendor-specific technological utility (intended for a specific HDD vendor) is used to repair the drive and gain access to user data in technological mode.

The PC-3000 Portable III HDD firmware database

The PC-3000 Portable III Systems have a massive database of factory firmware resources: FLASH ROMs, service area modules, service area tracks, and other HDD critical resources. The database is systematized and stores all data in compressed format. It allows getting quick and easy data access and sharing firmware resources between several PC-3000 Kits.

The PC-3000 Portable III SSD/Ultimate Systems which include the PC-3000 SSD Extended software can help to deal with the most complex SSD cases with such typical signs of internal Firmware corruption as wrong or zero capacity, no drive ID, invisible status in BIOS/OS despite the fact that a drive is connected.

The Universal Utility intended for diagnosing any SSD based on the ATA-8 specification (both currently existing models and those that will be manufactured in the future).

The Active Utilities (Special Utilities) intended for working with a particular drive model in factory mode. How to recover data from damaged HDD in a RAID with the PC-3000 Portable III Systems

The PC-3000 Portable III RAID/Ultimate Systems which include the Data Extractor RAID Edition software can work with 3 damaged HDDs connected to the PC-3000 Portable III ports within one task at the same time. The total number of connected HDDs can be increased by using motherboard ports and file-images.

The Data Extractor Portable III RAID Edition includes all Data Extractor Portable III features + additional crucial features for working with damaged HDDs of a virtual RAID:


  • Ability to make a full or partial data copy from any HDD included in the RAID
  • Ability to define and use a virtual translator for any HDD in the RAID or the whole virtual RAID

Before the Data Extractor RAID Edition appeared, you would have had to have made a full sector-by-sector copy of the data from the simple stripe if one of its members was physically damaged and could not be connected in a standard way, or it would not have been possible to get access to its sectors without using the PC-3000 methods. You could only have attempted to recover the user data after creating a copy.

Taking into account the significant capacity of high-end HDDs and possible issues with a full copy of the damaged drive, the PC-3000 Portable RAID/Ultimate Systems provide a unique approach:


  1. Create a Virtual RAID.
  2. Open the Virtual RAID in the Data Extractor Explorer and get an understanding of the data organization in the virtual RAID.
  3. Build a map of the required data. It can be a map of used sectors, a data map of the required catalogs, a necessary file map, or a metadata map.
  4. For the built map, build a “Sub-map” of sectors to be read from the damaged HDD.
  5. Make a sector-by-sector copy only of these required sectors by using the Data Extractor.
  6. Save the required data.

RAID configurations can be very complex. Even if the configuration appears to be simple, the data recovery from RAID is not an easy process, because it can be difficult to define the correct order of HDDs, the block size and the initial shift. April 14, 2020 The PC-3000 Portable III Now Supports the NVMe SSDs Based on Phison PS5007 Controller!

The PC-3000 Portable III is the first and the only solution for recovering data from PCIe NVMe SSDs using the Techno Mode. At the initial release, it supported only Silicon Motion SSDs based on SM2260 and SM2263 controllers. But it was just the beginning!

Now we have significantly expanded the list of supported drives by adding the NVMe SSDs based on the Phison PS5007 controller. And since all the PS5007-based SSDs are technically the same, you can recover data from any model based on this controller, even if it’s not listed in the Utility.

  • Added menu for selecting zones according to the CHS list and the A-LIST table to the "Disabling zones and heads";
  • In order to unify it with other utilities, the “Formatting” test has been moved to a separate quick access menu;
  • For F1_3D, F2_EG, N2B, N3 families loaders are replaced. New loaders have the ability to write a ROM dump to the drive completely, including a head map;
  • Added the "Change the head map in ROM" test for drives F1_3D, F2_EG, F3, M7S2, N2B, F3_4D, M7E, F4_3D, F4, M8E, MT2, N3, MP4, M9T;
  • Samsung USB utility adapted to work with USB-Host port PC-3000 Portable 3.

Toshiba

  • Added a logical scan for the PC-3000 Portable-III complex and for the USB Utility (for the USB Host port).

The PC-3000 Core

  • A completely redesigned simplified interface. Added support for NVMe and USB drives. Added report on the results of diagnostics and statistics on a copy creation.
  • Imaging speed increased by increasing priority of threads engaged in "secondary" parsing processes (background analysis, writing and reading maps) and energy saving settings changes (% of process using etc). Due to these improvements imaging speed was increased to minimum reading speed of two devices (source and patient). For example, the PC-3000 SAS II device is able to perform imaging with about 220 MB/sec;
  • Alternative maps
    • real-time coloring possibility for alternative map (during the reading process for example) was added;
    • real-time coloring possibility for alternative map on drives with changed sector size and "connected" map during the reading initial drives was added;
    • "Snapshots based on legend" alternative maps for File systems option was added.
  • During the saving process from the searching window now only saves files that meet the search criteria;

RAW recovery

  • Fixed the Fake APFS structures searching result issue;
  • Some types of files control has been improved to avoid possible fake searching result;
  • *.heic files are parsing now (before determined like *.mp4);
  • AppleCoreStorage structures parsing methods improved;
  • DHF and WFS structures searching has been added, also virtual partitions adding methods has been improved.
  • Virtual Drive - Map Decrypted:
    • Added support of 256 bit keys;
    • Added support of AES-CBC-WithoutDiffusor algorithms.
  • FileVault
    • Metadata parsing has been improved. Loading speed has been improved.
    • EncryptedRoot.plist.wipekey files is no longer required for a lot of tasks;
    • Unicode passwords are supported now.
  • BitLocker
    • Added support of Partitions with few recovery keys;
    • Added support of Unicode passwords.
  • VeraCrypt
    • Added support of VeraCrypt (though without Camellia and Kuznechik algorithms for now).
  • F2FS File system
    • Primary support of FS added.
  • NTFS file system
    • Added parser for NTFS LogFile. LogFile contains NTFS metadata changes (MFT, Index). Option is in the context menu of file system node (menu "Parse LFS", LFS stands for Log File Service). As a result, the virtual disk with so-called layers is created. It's possible to select a layer on the disk. Layer presents a snapshot of metadata at a certain time period. Number of layers correlates with the "age" of the layer. Based on practice, LogFile can contain metadata for a time period from several hours to several months.
    • Implemented basic support for the new type of EFS metadata.
    • Improved start offset detection for partitions with huge amount of non-resident catalogs;
    • Added support for MFT uploading for tasks with several disks.
    • Implemented saving procedure for deduplicated files with resident attribute C0.
  • UFS file system
    • Improves partition analysis with file extensions with more than 8 unicode symbols.
  • ExFAT file system
    • Improved partition analysis. Added parser for objects addressed by FAT table without descriptors in catalogs (LostFatObjects node).
  • FAT file system
    • Improved analysis for cases with more than 10000 catalogs;
    • Added support for the FAT table with more than 200000 sectors.
  • HFS+ file system
    • Improved performance of partition analysis.

Silicon Motion

  • eNew loaders have been added for SM2246EN and SM2246XT controllers;
  • During translator building an output of the total number of defective pages has been added into the log;
  • Tests for translator saving and uploading have been added;
  • Verification of wrong memory ID has been added into log during drive initialization and in "Memory chips test"
  • SM2246EN (SATA) controller:
    • New family Transcend 370s has been added;
  • SM2258XT (SATA) controller:
    • New family Silicon Power S55 has been added;
  • SM2260G (NVMe) controller:
    • New family ADATA XPG SX7000 has been added;
  • SM2263XT (NVMe) controller:
    • The following families have been added: AMD Radeon R5, Transcend MTE110S, Lexar NM600, Neo Forza Zion NFP03, HP EX900.

Phison

  • For PS3108, PS3111 and AS2258 controllers new loaders have been added;
  • Algorithm for correct Loader version autodetection in case if SSD stays in SAFE MODE has been improved;
  • Verification of wrong memory ID has been added into log during drive initialization and in "Memory chips test".
